Introduction of Panchtale Mandir
Panchtale Mandir is well known as the tallest temple in Nepal. The local Newari people refer to this temple as Nyatapol Temple. According to the Newari language, the word Nyatapola refers to a five-storey temple where Nyata means five-storey while pola means roof. This temple is located in Bhaktapur Durbar Square. The Panchtale Mandir was built by Bhupatindra Malla on 15 July 1702 AD.
Architecture of Panchtale Mandir
The Panchtale Mandie was built with the donation of devotees of the Kingdom of Bhaktapur and then the Kingdom of Lalitpur. The devotees of Bhaktapur and Lalitpur donated many materials like Sal timber, stones and more.
According to historical records, the Panchtale Mandir used 1,135,350 bricks to build the temple and 102,304 bricks for building the lower plinths.
The stairs of the Panchtale Mandir are enshrined by many statues. The bottom statue of Panchtale Mandir is Rajput wrestlers named Jai and Pratap. At that time, Jai and Pratap were famed wrestlers who were stronger than normal men. Just above them are statues of two elephants. Often elephants are representative of Lord Ganesha.
Just above them is a statue of two Singha. Singha also well known in English as Lions are the famous mythical fig cats found in the south Asian region.
Above them are the statues of two Sardulas, a mythical gryphon-like mythical creature. And the highest are the Tantric deities, Simhani and Vyaghrani who are represented as lionesses and tigresses.
Goddess Siddhi Laxmi
Goddess Siddhi Laxmi is the guardian deity of the Malla Royal Family. She is also the top goddess of the tantric religion and one of the main deities of the Newars of Bhaktapur.
